In 1900, Tongji Hospital was founded by Dr. Erich Paulun, a German in Shanghai, and then moved to Wuhan in 1955. After 120 years of construction and development, it has grown into a modern hospital integrating medical care, teaching, scientific research and talent training with a complete array of disciplines, a distinguished gathering of experts, exquisite medical techniques, state-of-the-art diagnostic and therapeutic equipment, outstanding research capabilities and sophisticated management methods. In May 2019, a new scientific research building of 80,000 m2 was put into formal use for the comprehensive improvement of research conditions and management levels.
As the priority has always been given to scientific innovation, the Hospital has introduced a series of incentive policies, greatly stimulating the initiative of medical staff in scientific research. Besides, the Hospital has made remarkable scientific attainments that are acclaimed "the Tongji Phenomenon" in the medical field. According to the Science and Technology Evaluation Metrics (STEM) published in 2021, Tongji Hospital was ranked fifth nationwide, remaining the top in central south China with 14 disciplines ranking top ten in China. In the 2021 China's Hospital Rankings issued by the Hospital Management Institute of Fudan University, Tongji Hospital leapfrogged to gain sixth place domestically, remaining the top one in central China and a total of 12 disciplines ranked among the top ten in China.
Tongji Hospital is equipped with 1 national medical center, 1 national clinical research center, 2 key laboratories of the Ministry of Education, 2 key laboratories of the National Health Commission, 3 key laboratories of Hubei Province, 14 clinical research centers of Hubei Province and 2 engineering research centers of Hubei Province. The Hospital was a cradle for 1 academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 1 academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 8 recipients for the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, 4 holders for the "New Century Ten Million Talents Project", 2 chief scientists of "973 Program", 2 holders for the Outstanding Youth Science Foundation, 11 New Century Excellent Talents awarded by the Ministry of Education, and other talents. It boasted 2 innovation teams, 8 key disciplines and 3 key cultivation disciplines of the Ministry of Education. So far, 31 disciplines have been qualified for drug clinical trials.
In the past five years, the Hospital has presided over more than 840 national scientific research projects, including the projects under the National Program for Key Science & Technology Projects, National Key Research & Development Program of China and National Natural Science Foundation of China, costing RMB 710 million. Since 2012, the Hospital has presided over more than 100 projects under the National Natural Science Foundation of China for ten consecutive years, ranking among the top of domestic medical institutions. In recent years, a total of 11 achievements have been granted with the Second Prize in the National Science and Technology Progress Award, National Technology Invention Award and the Second Prize in National Natural Science Award. According to the latest Statistical Report of Chinese Scientific and Technological Papers, Tongji Hospital came out in front with the number of published excellent journal papers, papers included in Science Citation Index-Expanded (SCIE) and citations of international papers. The Hospital, with our high-quality papers published in international journals, was ranked second nationwide and the number of international citations was the third in Chinese medical institutions. In addition, a large number of experts in the Hospital have held key positions in professional societies both at home and abroad. Eleven journals, including the Chinese Journal of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, have been founded by the Hospital, covering various fields of clinical medicine, pharmacy, nursing and auxiliary medical technology.
