Undergraduate Studies
Tongji Hospital has been undertaking the teaching tasks for more than 100 years. In 1907, Dr. Erich Paulun founded Shanghai German Medical College based in Tongji Hospital. The Medical College's undergraduate curriculum was a 5-year program, i.e. 2 years' pre-med study (i.e. pre-medicine) and 3 years' med study (i.e. post-medicine). The program was taught in German, so most Chinese students had to take 3 years to learn German. So, it was in fact an 8-year program. In 1915, Germany's Ministry of Education officially recognized the medical graduates of the Tongji Hospital academically equal to those of the German medical universities. In 1927, Medical and Engineering School was renamed Shanghai Tongji University.
