Tongji Hospital Clinical Research Center was set up in April 2018 to manage the investigator-initiated clinical studies and control study quality. With Zhou Jianfeng served as the Director, Xu Shabei and Zhu Xiaojian served as the Deputy Director, and Liu Wenhua served as a statistician, a clinical research team consisting of full-time researchers, data managers, biostatisticians and coordinators is under construction.

In order to learn from outstanding clinical research institutions nationwide and set up a collaboration network for domestic and international clinical researches, the Clinical Research Center, led by the Deputy Director of Scientific Research, visited West China Hospital, Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center, Guangdong Provincial People's Hospital, Shanghai East Hospital and Beijing Tiantan Hospital in May 2018, and sent a delegation to Harvard Medical School for exchange in December 2018.

Meanwhile, Tongji Hospital decided to initiate a pilot program for clinical research and provide 10-20 high-level clinical studies with massive financial support each year, so as to adapt to the reform of national science and technology system, promote original creativity, take the lead in the innovation of cutting-edge medical technologies, seek for a greater voice in clinical research, make a number of clinical research achievements bearing the hallmark of "Tongji Hospital" with internationally significant effect, and develop a group of well-known experts in clinical medicine at home and abroad. Given this, the application for the first batch of clinical study projects in the pilot program was initiated at the beginning of 2019. After formal review, preliminary evaluation, ethical review, re-evaluation, etc., 59 of them were scored in terms of innovation, practicability, feasibility, research basis and research design. Then, the top 20 were selected and funded with 2-3 million yuan respectively.

During the outbreak of COVID-19, in order to give full play to our advantages in clinical practice and scientific research and deal with disease outbreak, the applications of 10 studies of "diagnosis and treatment system for COVID-19" organized by the Clinical Research Center were approved by the Hospital, with the findings playing an important role in the fight against the epidemic.

In order to strengthen the clinical study team in the Hospital, 25 employees from different departments were organized by the Clinical Research Center to participate in the Harvard clinical study training program from 2019 to 2020, so as to receive 1-year systematic training in terms of clinical study design, statistical analysis, ethical points and relevant knowledge and practice organized by the Clinical Research Center, preparing young backbones for clinical studies in the Hospital. In addition, the Clinical Research Center held at least 2 clinical research seminars each year, during which well-known domestic clinical study experts were invited to give professional clinical research training for all departments in the Hospital.
