The 2017 ICN Congress (International Council of Nurses, ICN) was held at Barcelona, Spain from 27 May to 1 June. The international gathering of nearly ten thousands of nurses from 135 nations focused on the nurses’ leading role in the transformational of care, calling on global nurses to commit themselves to health care and undertake the corresponding roles in the transformation of care.

On invitation of the International Council of Nurses Congress, a delegation of six members of the Nursing Department of Tongji Hospital, Huazhong University of Science and Technology attended the largest international event for nurses. Six attendees have given two oral presentations and four posters in the fields of magnet management, patient safety management, oncology nursing, pediatric nursing, intensive care, professional practice and policy innovation respectively.

In the conference, Vice Director of Nursing Department of Tongji Hospital, Wang Ying extended a speech of “Establishment and Practice of an Informational Safety Management Model to Prevent Inpatient Falls”. Vice Director Wang shared the experience and practice in preventing inpatient falls based on informatization platform in aspects of patient fall risks evaluation, prevention measures bundle, health education and instructions, monitor of process, fall event reporting and tracing in details.

After that, another Vice Director of Nursing Department of Tongji Hospital, Liu Yu , made a speech of “Magnet Management in Tongji Hospital: Create a Healthy Work Environment for Nurses”. During the speech, Vice Director Liu introduced a series of transformational initiatives in Tongji hospital based on 5 components and 14 magnet elements of magnet hospital to create an excellent working environment for nurses. The wonderful and humorous speech of vice Director Liu attracted a full house audience and won a round of applause.

The speeches of two nursing administrators from Tongji hospital have drawn participants’ great attention. After the conference, the two vice Directors had a broad and in-depth discussion and communication with international colleagues. The innovative management mode and method have been fully approved by domestic and foreign counterparts, who expressed the willing to have a further communication and cooperation.

After the conference, the local journalist of Enfermería TV station has interviewed the Tongji delegation and reported their feelings and gains from this international conference . The honor and mien of Tongji delegation were recorded by video camera. In the end of the interview, Tongji delegation said proudly “We are Chinese nurses.”  Echoes of the sound from China reverberated in ICN Venue!

Participating the International Council of Nurses Congress is meaningful to Tongji nursing profession. Two speeches and four posters have shown the extraordinary nursing in Tongji to the world.It marks a solid step in the process of internationalization of Tongji nursing.
